“Shannon in Nepal” Lapis Lazuli Necklace

April 4, 2010

Shannon in Nepal Necklace

Although I’m fascinated by different cultures, I’m not much of a world traveler. One of my co-workers, Shannon, is much more adventurous than I am and recently went on an amazing journey to Nepal, where she spent her days trekking through the Himalayas. I don’t think she ran into any Yetis, but she did bring me back the absolutely stunning piece of Lapis Lazuli, featured at the centre of this design. I am completely in love with this gorgeous specimen of Lapis, which is sprinkled with flecks of pyrite, and I’m really happy she’d think of bringing something back for me.

The lovely piece of  lapis, however, arrived as a pendant topped with a silver decorative piece — the bail broke off after I started playing around with it. It was relatively easy to strip off the silver, which was “glued” to the top half of the lapis with some sort of tree sap (or something else like that) that smelled like incense. Luckily, I liked the stone more with out the bail  — more of the wonderful stone showed. I created a right angle weave bezel for the stone to match the blue goldstone beads, which I had already bezeled.
